Quality affordable rental opportunities are the cornerstone of housing for low-income families. Safe, decent and
affordable housing is pivotal in our society. Beyond providing basic shelter for those that do not qualify for homeownership,
or are unable to own their own home, it has a positive impact on the economy. Quality affordable rental opportunities improve
the quality of our environment and support the diversity of our community.
Responding to the growing awareness of the social problems connected to concentrated poverty and to the economic burden of
warehousing low-income families in large developments, RIHA has shifted toward policies that mix households with varying
incomes. In accordance with the Federal Government, RIHA will continue to move in this direction by removing obsolete public
housing units from its portfolio. As this occurs, Community Housing Solutions (CHS), the development arm for RIHA, will
replace those units with alternate housing opportunities constructed to appeal to a broad-base market serving a diverse population.
By developing new communities based on transition and hope, CHS is providing more choices and more options for more people
creating a full ladder of housing opportunities. New development opportunities consist of multi-unit and single-family in-fill,
mixed-income for-sale, rental, and lease/purchase options that are indistinguishable from market-rate housing. Housing developed
by CHS is specifically designed to serve a diverse population.
